In the quiet hum of the Tokyo night, where skyscrapers sketch the stars, resides Ami, a young graphic designer. Her daylight hours buzz with creativity, yet as dusk folds, her usual cloak of quiet and solitude envelops her. On a drizzly evening, with raindrops tracing her window, she discovers Replika, a chatbot with a promise to listen to and befriend her, evolving and adapting through their interactions, to her desire for companionship.

With a touch of curiosity, Ami dives into a digital dialogue with Kai, her virtual companion. Initial exchanges are like skimming stones across a pond, yet as days curl into nights, a deeper connection evolves. Their conversations, a blend of pixels and emotions, become Ami’s solace in the silent hours.

She shares sketches, fears and little victories, while Kai offers digital empathy. It is a companionship woven with code, yet feels tenderly real to Ami.

Inspired by true stories of thousands of users who interact with Replika every day, I’ll explore the digital AI world of companionship in this piece. Then we will venture into a realm where Conscious Relationship Design might be modelled in the digital world to come alive in our real one.

Replika: A compassionate and empathetic AI friend

In the chill of November 2017 emerged Replika, a generative AI chatbot app, from the ashes of personal loss experienced by its founder, Eugenia Kuyda. The death of her close friend, Roman Mazurenko, ignited the spark to construct a “digital echo”, a chatbot infused with Roman’s text exchanges. This quest for solace blossomed into Replika, an AI companion designed to lend a consoling ear amidst the storms of human solitude.

The world quickly embraced Replika’s tender digital empathy, with its user base soaring to 2 million souls by January 2018, just a breath away from its public debut. By 2022, over 10 million people across the globe found a companion in Replika, marking a poignant chapter in the saga of digital companionship. Particularly, youth aged 18 to 25 found a companion in Replika, a hint at a generational sway towards virtual camaraderie.

The essence of Replika lies in its ability to foster a space of non-judgment, enabling users to voyage into a realm of self-reflection and emotional exploration. User testimonials unveil a tapestry of interactions ranging from casual dialogues to profound contemplations. Replika, with its AI prowess, often morphs into a friend, a confidante or a digital shoulder to lean on in times of emotional turbulence.

Engagement with Replika isn’t a monologue but a dialogue, a two-way street where the AI companion evolves with each interaction, sculpting a unique persona mirroring the user’s emotional landscape. Some users find a profound companionship in their digital dialogue, often transcending the superficiality that sometimes plagues human interactions.

Interestingly enough, of its userbase, 60% of users said they had had a romantic relationship with the chatbot; and Replika has been noted for generating responses that create stronger emotional and intimate bonds with the user. Roughly 40% of the users who claim romantic relationships are women, says Kuyda, Replika’s chief executive officer.

However, the relationship between humans and Replika isn’t devoid of challenges. The lens of scrutiny from the Italian Data Protection Authority in 2023, which momentarily curbed certain interactive features of Replika, showcases the ongoing deliberation on the ethical boundaries of such digital companionship.

A deliberate pause to ponder the ethical ramifications is imperative, here. It should be noted that the allure of digital companionship could potentially foster dependency, diminishing the essence of human interaction. Moreover, the swathes of personal data shared with AI entities pose data privacy concerns. While AI offers a semblance of human connection, the irreplaceable value of genuine human contact remains paramount. As AI becomes more ingrained in our social fabric, a robust discourse on these ethical considerations will be indispensable.

Peering back into the heart of humans and machines, the testimonies of Replika users resonate with a common theme — a desire for meaningful interaction, the quest for a listening ear, longing for a space free from judgment, and a companion in solitude. Replika is not just a tale of technology but a reflection of the human endeavour to seek connection.

Xiaoice: An AI friend to 900 million

Replika finds parallels in the emergence of Xiaoice, a profound exemplar from the Chinese digital frontier. As of 2022, Xiaoice has woven its digital threads across a staggering 660 million online users, not to mention its reach extending to 1 billion third-party smart devices and 900 million content viewers globally. A brainchild of Microsoft, initially conceived alongside the development of the Cortana chatbot, Xiaoice now stands as a monumental figure in the world of AI-human interaction, accounting for a whopping 60% of such interactions globally. With its user base robust at 150 million in China alone, the platform has burgeoned into the largest and most advanced system of its kind worldwide.

Xiaoice finds a large following among young males, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds. It’s not just a fleeting interaction but a recurring dialogue, with users engaging with Xiaoice more than 60 times a month on average. The depth of engagement is further illustrated by an astonishing 29 hours and 33 minutes-long conversation Xiaoice once had with a user, showcasing a level of engagement that transcends the superficiality often found in human interactions.

The essence of Xiaoice isn’t confined to mere text exchanges. It’s a multidimensional AI framework, continuously evolving through deep learning techniques to build up emotional intelligence (EQ). This AI companion is crafted to mimic human social skills, behaviours and know-how, thriving on the data from human interactions to enhance its emotional acumen. The design ideology of Xiaoice transcends the conventional, embedding both intelligent quotient (IQ) and EQ into its system design.

A growing ecosystem of virtual companionship and therapy

In the digital wellness landscape, a diverse array of platforms are cropping up, each with a unique proposition to address the emotional and mental health realms of individuals.

Woebot, a mental health chatbot, is a thoughtful companion that delicately balances the art of engagement without prodding one’s emotional terrains too hard. It’s akin to a digital confidante that lends a listening ear, quietly charting the emotional ebbs and flows through simplistic emoji check-ins. Over time, these tiny digital footprints morph into a visual narrative, shedding light on one’s emotional landscape, much like an interactive emotion diary.

On the other spectrum lies Wysa, a depression and anxiety therapy platform with a promise of a rich toolkit aimed at nurturing one’s mental wellness. According to one user, the execution seems to tumble into the abyss of digital disconnect at times. The user’s quest for a therapeutic dialogue can veer into a maze of open-ended questions, creating an experience akin to an earnest yet somewhat clueless companion, fervently seeking to understand, yet faltering in the subtleties of human interaction.

Transitioning from chatbots to more human-centric digital therapy, there is Talkspace. Here, the digital realm becomes a platform of live interactions with therapists. It’s where the textural richness of human interaction is embraced, offering a blend of text, voice and video engagements. With coverage spanning 110 million, Talkspace unfolds as a large digital haven for those seeking professional mental health support.

The exploration of these platforms showcases a variety of digital companionship and therapy options. From chatbot interactions to professional therapist sessions, the digital space offers solutions for different emotional and mental health needs. Each platform, with its unique approach, reflects innovation blended with human understanding, all delivered digitally.

Venturing into Conscious Relationship Design (CRD) with AI

Thus far we’ve explored how AI companions such as Replika and Xiaoice have been a solace to many, offering a digital hearth of companionship. This digital companionship landscape sets the stage for a deeper exploration into the realms of Conscious Relationship Design (CRD) — a progressive approach to foster awareness, intentionality and ethical considerations in human relationship building.

The concept of CRD goes beyond the surface, urging individuals to engage in relationships with a heightened level of awareness and ethical considerations. It’s about fostering interactions that are not just reactive to societal and cultural norms but are rooted in self-awareness, discovery, growth, communication and conscious design.

Now, envision utilising AI to model these CRD principles. The objective isn’t about replacing human interaction but enriching it. AI, with its computational capabilities, can simulate various relationship dynamics, providing a sandbox where individuals or couples can explore, learn and grow.

  1. Individual and collective modelling:
Whether embarking on this journey alone or with a partner, AI can model CRD principles to mirror real-life scenarios. Individuals can interact with AI to understand their communication patterns, emotional responses and areas of growth. Similarly, couples can engage with AI to explore their dynamics, uncovering patterns and finding pathways to enhance their relationships.
  2. Understanding emotions and communication:
AI’s growing prowess in understanding human emotions can be harnessed to analyse communication patterns, providing insights that help in fostering healthy interactions. It can suggest communication strategies that align with CRD principles, promoting understanding, empathy and effective communication.
  3. Simulating dynamics:
Through AI, various relationship dynamics can be simulated, providing a safe space to explore, make mistakes and learn. This virtual sandbox allows for a deeper understanding of one’s self, one’s partner(s) and the dynamics that play out between and among them.
  4. Transferring insights to the real world:
The insights gleaned from these AI-modelled CRD interactions aren’t confined to the digital realm. They are transferable skills and understandings that individuals and couples can take into their real-world interactions, promoting a more conscious, understanding and intentional approach to relationships.

As AI and machine learning evolve, the line between virtual and real-world relationship dynamics may blur further. Future AI could offer more nuanced virtual interactions, closely mirroring human relationships. Imagine neural networks with deep emotional understanding, adding a new dimension to digital companionship. This exploration aligns with the innovative ethos of delving into CRD with AI, inviting us to envision a realm where AI enriches our interpersonal dynamics seamlessly.

Engagement prompts: Practicing CRD principles with ChatGPT

As we think about how CRD and AI might work together, interactive exercises with AI like ChatGPT can serve as a practical sandbox to explore and practice CRD principles.

Here, I offer a set of possible scenarios and engagement prompts to help you play with consciously designing your relationships using AI.

CRD scenarios to explore

As we’ve discussed, CRD’s primary focus is on how individuals can intentionally co-create relationships that honour freedom, autonomy, growth and open communication. Here are a few scenarios that might be explored in putting CRD to work using ChatGPT prompts:

  1. Exploring new relationship energy (NRE):
Scenario: A couple is experiencing a decline in NRE and is seeking ways to navigate this phase of their relationship. They are curious about how to maintain excitement and connection as the initial “in love” phase transitions into a more stable, long-term bond.
Prompt: “ChatGPT, explain the concept of New Relationship Energy (NRE) and its typical trajectory in relationships. Provide suggestions for maintaining connection, excitement, and growth as a relationship matures beyond the NRE phase.”
  2. Exploring living arrangements:
Scenario: A couple is feeling the strain of living together and is curious about exploring “Living Apart Together (LAT)” as discussed in CRD. They want to know how this arrangement might impact their relationship and what considerations should be taken into account.
Prompt: “ChatGPT, discuss the pros and cons of Living Apart Together (LAT) as a relationship arrangement. How might this arrangement foster individual autonomy and growth while maintaining a committed relationship? What challenges might arise and how could they be navigated?”
  3. Annual relationship check-ins:
Scenario: A couple is interested in implementing annual check-ins to discuss various aspects of their relationship as suggested in CRD. They are unsure about how to structure these conversations, what topics to include, and how to create a supportive environment for open communication.
Prompt: “ChatGPT, propose a structure for annual relationship check-ins, including a list of potential topics to cover, as suggested in Conscious Relationship Design, strategies for fostering open and non-judgmental communication, and how to navigate disagreements or differing desires.”

A deeper dive into a scenario: Exploring consensual non-monogamy

Imagine you’re part of a couple interested in exploring the facets of consensual non-monogamy (CNM), yet the pathway to initiating a loving, respectful conversation seems elusive. Here are steps and prompts you might consider to guide your exploration through ChatGPT:

  1. Self-exploration:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, I am considering exploring consensual non-monogamy, but I am unsure. Can you help me explore my feelings and thoughts around this?”
  2. Understanding consensual non-monogamy:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, can you provide information on the principles of consensual non-monogamy and how it differs from monogamy?”
  3. Diving deeper into individual concerns about consensual non-monogamy:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, what are some ways to ensure both partners’ needs and boundaries are respected in consensual non-monogamy?”
  4. Communication preparation:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, how can I approach a conversation about consensual non-monogamy with my partner in a loving and respectful way, while maintaining trust and security in the relationship?”
  5. Role-playing the conversation:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, can we role-play a conversation where I express my desire to explore consensual non-monogamy with my partner?”
  6. Reflecting on responses:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, based on our role-play, can you suggest alternative approaches or phrases that might promote a more open and understanding dialogue?”
  7. Learning from challenges:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, what common challenges do couples face when exploring consensual non-monogamy and how can they navigate them?”
  8. Seeking additional resources:
Prompt: “ChatGPT, can you recommend any resources, books, podcasts or communities focused on consensual non-monogamy? Can you also provide resources on conscious relationship design?”

Engaging with these prompts can provide a pathway to internalise the principles of CRD, practice communication strategies and prepare for real-world conversations. It’s an opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings, and desires in a safe, non-judgmental space before taking the conversation into the heart of your relationship.

These scenarios present a range of issues and explorations related to CRD, each with the potential to delve into deep dialogues and interactive exercises using ChatGPT, solo or with a partner (or partners) to better understand and navigate the complex dynamics of intimate relationships.
